Zero-carbon ideas from the transportation research community
Transportation is now the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. For the country to help stabilize the global temperature increase at 2°C or less, dramatic changes must happen in a very short amount of time. We want to highlight this issue during 100th TRB Annual Meeting, Transforming Transportation, and Transportation Camp events in January 2021—the world's highest-profile annual congregation of the transportation community, occurring at a critical moment in U.S., and global, climate policy.
This page contains instructions on how to submit, example videos, and information about how submissions will be shared.
Submit your idea show / hide
Use the form below to submit a short, 30–60 second video that highlights one big idea that you believe can help decarbonize transport, in the U.S. and worldwide. Your idea could be:
- a key result, policy, or action studied in a paper you submitted for the TRB Annual Meeting.
- an initiative or project your organization, company, or agency is working on.
- something you—a transport expert or advocate—have changed in your own life or community to reduce GHG emissions.
- the work of others that you want to boost or highlight;
- or, anything else!
Actions to reduce transport emissions can help to achieve other, important sustainability goals at the same time—like improving access and inclusion, equity, public health, and more. Mention these in your video to help others see the value of your idea!
How your video will be used
Volunteers from the AMS30(2) Climate Change subcommittee will use your submissions to highlight both the diversity of ideas from across the transport research community and the ideas and concepts that are mentioned most often.
- A curated set of submissions will be carefully edited into a short (~3 minute) video that participants in the TRBAM, TTDC, and Transport Camp attendees can share during session breaks.
- A larger subset will be shared via a launch event during the period of the virtual Annual Meeting, and on social media.
- All submissions will be indexed and linked from this website, so that you can browse others' and share a link to your own.
Preparing your video
Make a recording.
Show / hide recording tips- Start directly with words like, “Hello, my name is ____, and my one big idea is…”. You don't need to state your affiliation or credentials; we'll use the info with your submission to credit you.
- Use one of many online guides (such as this one) to record a file that:
- has clear, loud audio, free of background noise,
- frames your face or body clearly,
- is well-lit, and
- is 60 seconds or less.
- Remember all the rules of good persuasive speaking:
- Don't speak too quickly.
- Use pauses to separate sentences and ideas.
- Make direct eye contact with the camera; smile!
- Avoid direct attacks on individuals or groups, pitches for specific commercial products and services, or profanity.
Upload your video to a shared service that allows a direct link (URL) to the video file.
For instance, you can use a service like Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, or similar; or upload either a public or unlisted video to YouTube.
Finally, submit the link to your video or file.
Use the embedded form below; click here; or e-mail your submission and extra information to mail@trbclimate.org. The form asks for your identity, affiliation, attendance at the January 2021 transport events, and gives you the chance to share more information about any research or other work related to your idea.
